McColl Park Design
The design for McColl Park was inspired by the site’s historical significance and its meaningful role in the city’s evolution. From this intention, a compelling sculpture of ‘The Nest’ was created as the primary focus of the design. This concept is derived from two key ideas: Charlotte as the "Hornet's Nest of Rebellion" - a mantra embraced by Charlotteans that speaks to their tenacity and perseverance, as well as the notion that a nest is created from a series of interwoven, but distinct elements working together to create a cohesive system.
The Nest is comprised of fifty-six-foot tall, suspended cylinders attached to a catenary cable system that appears to float above the trees. At night, the Nest will be illuminated by accent lighting. The park will also include a series of gardens, decorative paving, furnishings, and a water mirror that will provide opportunities for interactivity, reflection, and light. The gardens will define the park’s edges, providing multi-season interest and a buffer from the street. Benches, tables, and chairs, both fixed and flexible, will be located throughout the site. The Park is designed to accommodate large- and small-scale events and day-to-day aspects of civic life. Ultimately, McColl Park will serve as a point of reflection for Charlotte's achievements and a harbinger of its future success.
