Designed by Charlotte native landscape designer Walter Hood and Bolton & Menk, this park will celebrate the city’s rich history, inspire the future, and honor Hugh McColl, a visionary who has significantly shaped Charlotte.

The park’s design seamlessly considers the city’s historical elements with the desire for a flexible, inclusive space, blurring the lines between public art and site design. The design team began by exploring the history of Charlotte, from Indigenous Peoples and the American Revolution to the recent history of the park itself. These historical points were synthesized with the unique needs of this site, ensuring it appeals to a diverse audience. Through conversations with stakeholders, the greater community, and the McColl Park Committee, the team conceptualized a space that tells the story of Charlotte’s past while nodding to the life and achievements of Hugh McColl and his contributions to the city’s success.
